چکیده

We have observed the dark cloud Barnard 68 with SCUBA at 850 µm and with SIMBA at 1.2 mm. The submillimetre and millimetre dust emission correlate well with the extinction map of Alves, Lada, & Lada (2001). The A V /850 µm correlation is clearly not linear and suggests lower temperatures for the dust in the inner core of the cloud. Assuming a model for the temperature gradient, we derive the cloud-averaged dust emis-sivities (normalised to the V-Band extinction efficiency) at 850 µm and 1.2 mm. We find κ 850µm /κ V = 4.0 ± 1.0 · 10 −5 and κ 1.2mm /κ V = 9.0 ± 3.0 · 10 −6. These values are compared with other determinations in this wavelength regime and with expectations for models of diffuse dust and grain growth in dense clouds.

Millimetre continuum observations of southern massive star formation regions . II . SCUBA observations of cold cores and the dust grain emissivity index ( β )

We report the results of a submillimetre continuum emission survey targeted toward 78 star formation regions, 72 of which are devoid of methanol maser and UC HII regions, identified in the SEST/SIMBA millimetre continuum survey of Hill et al. (2005). At least 45 per cent of the latter sources, dubbed ‘mm-only’, detected in this survey are also devoid of mid infrared MSX emission. The 450 and 85...

Submillimeter Continuum Properties of Cold Dust in the Inner Disk and Outflows of M 82

Deep submillimeter (submm) continuum imaging observations of the starburst galaxy M82 are presented at 350, 450, 750 and 850μm wavelengths, that were undertaken with the Submillimetre Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii. The presented maps include a co-addition of submm data mined from the SCUBA Data Archive. The co-added data produce the deepest s...

SCUBA Observations of the Host Galaxies of Gamma-Ray Bursts

In recent years, a population of galaxies with huge infrared luminosities and dust masses has been discovered in the submillimetre. Observations suggest that the AGN contribution to the luminosities of these submillimetre-selected galaxies is low; instead their luminosities are thought to be mainly due to strong episodes of star formation following merger events. Our current understanding of GR...

SCUBA Deep Fields and Source Confusion

Deep submillimetre(submm)-wave surveys made over the last three years using the SCUBA camera at the 15-m James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) have revealed a new population of very luminous high-redshift galaxies. The properties of this population, and their contribution to the intensity of the extragalactic background radiation field are described briefly, especially in the context of the SCUB...

Millimetric properties of gamma ray burst host galaxies

We present millimetre (mm) and submillimetre (submm) photometry of a sample of five host galaxies of Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), obtained using the MAMBO2 and SCUBA bolometer arrays respectively. These observations were obtained as part of an ongoing project to investigate the status of GRBs as indicators of star formation. Our targets include two of the most unusual GRB host galaxies, selected as...
